Close to the bottom of your profile page you’ll see a link to "change contact preferences", behind which are a series of options that will hopefully help reduce inbox overload. By default, you’ll be signed up to hear from everyone about everything. But you may only be interested in hearing about new ventures, not enquiries into open positions at your company. Tick the boxes that correspond with the type of opportunities you want to know about, and fill in the advice field with precise information on what kinds of projects you’d consider.

Before saving your changes, take a moment to think about exactly who you want contacting you. If you only accept introductions (see "Introductions"), you will only hear from your contacts. But if you grant access for both introductions and InMail, you’ll hear from anyone (including headhunters and recruiters) willing to pay for premium service.

Rounding out your résumé

Once you leap the hurdle of immodesty, you’re sure to have more to say about yourself than might fit within LinkedIn’s major headings. Still, there are valuable parts of your history and personality that potential employers and business colleagues may find interesting, or see as a point of commonality. Perhaps you want to highlight your performance background with your university a cappella group, or prove your writing chops with the blog you keep – but you wouldn’t exactly call either one professional experience. LinkedIn realizes this, and has created space where you can exhibit selections from your unique background.

When viewing your education details, select add a school, or edit one listed already, to see fields for activities, societies and additional notes. Belonging to an alumni club has helped more than one person get ahead in this world, so be sure to include that along with any notes about your stellar academic or extracurricular endeavours.

Back in your overall profile, you’ll see a field for additional information . Use this area to link to your websites or blogs, provide some of your interests as talking points during interviews and highlight any honours or awards you received while working in your professional roles. You’ll also see the groups and associations you’ve joined through LinkedIn, along with the option of hiding any one of them from prying eyes.

Applications

Besides being a place to promote yourself and develop connections, LinkedIn can be used as a hub for group collaboration. On your profile, click add an application at the bottom of the page and you’ll see a number of apps intended to help you share information across your network. You can use them to help promote the things you’ve done personally, or inform groups and organizations with whom you’re connected of articles, research and results you may all find relevant.

Perhaps a recruiter wants to see some examples of your work, or your team is putting the finishing touches to a big presentation – productivity applications like Box.net Files or Google Presentations could service both needs.
